Eating Anomalies : Anorexia Is Not Only About What She Sees In The Mirror

I read an article the other day that truly recounted, “Anorexia is about what she sees in the mirror.” I wanted to scream! I'm not saying that an eating disorder has zip to do with what girls see in the mirror. But for somebody to make a convincing statement like that implies this is ALL anorexia is about. It is deceiving and authored by someone who doesn't understand eating abnormalities. I can't state firmly enough, anorexia and bulimia is not just about what she sees in the mirror. This belief is partly why folks do not have empathy or enough compassion for those with eating disorders.

They think it's the “vanity” disorder. It is not. An eating disorder is a complex mental disorder. There are multiple things that make a contribution to the development of anorexia or bulimia. Research is showing there is a important biological component in the development of eating defects. Many girls have mums, siblings, aunts or cousins that have or had eating defects.

There is so much online and you've got to be careful what you suspect. I can not stress enough to analyze several sources to ensure the info you are getting is accurate. One of the most significant reasons you need accurate info is you are going to share with your kid what you learn.

Imagine enlightening her that she is just vain and this eating disorder is her fault. How will that make her feel? It isn't only wrong, it is wicked. Now imagine being able to tell her this ED is no one’s fault. There are biological issues, temperament and character that she was born with that prejudice her to this illness. That doesn't mean she will not do something about it, it just means it's not her fault she is sick. Imagine the difference in how she would feel and her attitude towards recovery when she's got the right information, delivered with compassion and understanding. It will make all the difference in the world and it will reinforce your relationship because you understand what's really going on. She is blaming herself and she has to know it's not her fault.

Make sure you tell her. It will help.
